Manly Beach: More Than Just Sand and Surf
There is a reason the Manly ferry is Sydney's most-loved commute for visitors. As you pull away from Circular Quay, the Opera House sails past on one side and the Harbour Bridge arches overhead — and 30 minutes later you step onto the wharf at one of Australia's great beach towns.
Manly sits on a narrow peninsula flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the east and Sydney Harbour to the west. The 1.5-kilometre beach is patrolled year-round by Surf Life Saving volunteers, making it a safe choice for swimmers of all abilities. The consistent break also makes it one of Sydney's most reliable surf beaches, with professional lessons available for beginners right on the sand.
Beyond the main beach, the suburb rewards exploration. A ten-minute coastal walk south leads to the protected cove of Shelly Beach, one of NSW's first marine reserves, where snorkellers drift alongside Eastern Blue Grouper and curious cuttlefish. To the north, the dramatic sandstone headland of North Head frames the entrance to Sydney Harbour with panoramic views stretching to the open ocean.
